We were featured in the April 2011 Mike Holmes Magazine “As A Pro” section. Here is the text below. The question that was asked was –

“I have water damage and mold from a leaky toilet in the hardwood floor and subfloor of a half bath. I am in the process of checking references for the contractors I am considering hiring for the mold remediation/repair. What sort of questions should I ask when I speak to the references?”

Here are the questions you should consider asking: Did the company advocate the use of a third party inspection company to prepare a site-specific Remediation Protocol and Post Remediation Verification (PRV) testing? A company that understands this relationship is not afraid to have their work inspected by a professional hired by the client. Also ask if the company passed the PRC testing on the first try? A good company prides itself on passing the PRC on the first and only time.

If an independent tester was not used, politely ask why the reference chose not to. The answer can be personal (it may be budget issues), and can demonstrate a level of trust in the remediator.(A third party independent inspector should always be used) Also, was the company helpful in identifying and repairing the moisture intrusion issue that caused the mold problem? The source of your moisture problem may be is obvious, but often it might not be that easy to identify. The first step in any mold abatement project is to solve the underlying moisture problem even before abatement begins. The cleaned area can easily re-amplify mold if moisture continues to be an issue.

Then ask, what did their equipment and vehicles look like? Dirty equipment could cross contaminate your home if it was on a job with a serious mold problem.

Now is a great time to take a peek inside your crawlspace to see how it faring.  Pick a day that has extreme heat and humidity and look for condensation accumulating on HVAC components, wood joist, and other building materials. If you observe excessive accumulation of condensation over a few visits, your crawlspace may need sealed or other humidity reduction services need be employed. Strong musty odors, sagging insulation, and damp/muddy conditions are also indicative of a serious moisture problem.
