How to Properly Install A Crawl Space Vapor Barrier
- Removal & Disposal of the Existing Vapor Barrier: Our installation process begins with the removal & disposal of the existing vapor barrier. Having multiple layers of vapor barrier installed on top of each other traps water in between the plastic folds. The trapped water contributes to the overall relative humidity inside of the crawl space.
- Remove Debris from Crawl Space: There is no better time to remove crawl space debris than during the installation of a new vapor barrier. We’ve seen it all down there! Stuff ranging in size from bits of wire to relic water heaters & air handlers, removing the years of accumulated debris that finds its way into the crawl space is best practice. Brick chards and other sharp objects that can puncture the vapor barrier should be removed so not to damage the new liner.
- Proper Sheet Layering : Overlapping sheets should be layered in a “Reverse Shingle” orientation where the topographically high sheet is pinned below the lower positioned sheet. This layer design is favorable for crawl space applications as water that flows on top of the vapor barrier is routed under the down gradient flap discharging water under the vapor barrier. If sheets were layered a “Traditional Shingle” orientation, water flows over the overlapping seam and collecting in the low end of the crawl space. Standing water in a crawl space or basement is a dangerous proposition due to the close proximity to electrical outlets and the potential of electric shock.
- Overlap & Pinning of Sheets: Sheets should overlap each other at least 12-inches and be pinned to the floor of the crawl space every 2 to 4 sq ft.
Benefits of installing a crawl space vapor barrier system:
- Better control in room temperature: The moisture in your crawl space can affect the temperature in your home. The moisture in your crawl space absorbs all the warmth from your house, or it keeps it from escaping. Utilizing a vapor barrier system helps to seals these spaces, helping you control the temperature in your home.
- Prevents mold: Dampness and moisture in your crawl space create the ideal environment for mold growth. Having a crawl space vapor barrier system helps to reduce the chance of mold growth.
- Energy-saving: As high moisture levels in crawl spaces change the temperature inside your home, your electricity bills rise because more electricity is being used to keep the temperature even. Installing a crawl space vapor barrier system will act as a sealant by controlling the moisture levels, making your home more energy-efficient, and lowering your energy costs.
- Protecting the pipes: A crawl space vapor barrier system can prolong the life of your pipes. If there is moisture in your crawl space and gets to your pipes, they’ll likely start rusting and break. Installing a vapor barrier system keeps your pipes dry – which means fewer repair costs to have to worry about.
